What is a Deba Knife

A deba knife is the name given to a popular knife used in many kitchens. A deba is much like a Chef or utility knife but made in Japan. A Deba is typically lighter and provides a more precise cut than a chef knife.

The handle of the deba knife is often round, providing a very comfortable grip allowing more comfortable and precise movements with the blade. This design makes the knife perfect for cutting fish, poultry and beef.

There are many manufacturers of fine deba knives, Kershaw, Kanetsune, Seki Cut, Bunmei, and many more. If you are shopping for a deba knife be sure to research them well, a kitchen knife is an investment.

a deba knife is HEAVIER than a typical european style chef's knife, not lighter. a deba knife is typically used for boning filleting whole fish and poultry. the best european approximation of a deba knife would be a combination of a cleaver and a carving knife. the japanese equivalent of a european chef's knife is a santuko knife, not a deba knife.

I have a Henkels Professional Santoku 7 inc.chef's knife and is no dougt HEAVIER than my deba 4 inc. knife. Your deba is surely BIGGER, LARGER than mine. A Deba is typically lighter and provides more precise cut than a chef knife.

    Shopping for a Deba Knife

When you are shopping for any kitchen knife be selective. Make sure you are buying a good quality kitchen knife.

Look at the manufacturer, be sure the manufacturer stands behind the product. Lifetime warranties.

Look at the blade, forged and full tang, always the best. Lasts longer and is stronger.

Look at the balance of the knife. Does it feel good in the hand? Balance is not balance as you might think, balance is how the knife fits your hand, like an extension or like a rock?

These are just a few of the things you need to look for before making a purchase.
